Course Reflection
ENC 1102 was a course
that gave me the tools that I need to succeed in a writing career. I chose to
become a Journalist and when I did, there were certain criteria that I had to
meet. That criteria was to not only pass, but excel in my ENC courses at UCF. I
was able to do so in ENC 1101, after a grueling semester, receiving an A.
However, ENC 1102 was a different and much more intense challenge.
Trying to balance my
studying between five difficult courses, there were many weeks where I wasn’t able
to work on my paper at all. For a good portion of the semester, I didn’t even
know where I wanted to go with my paper. However, as I continued to attend
class, I was able to find my way. The TED Talks videos and lessons gave me the
motivation that I needed to continue to apply myself to my project.
I made the decision to write
my analytical paper on salary’s effect in Major League Baseball. Throughout the
process there were many snags and I had to revisit big portions of the paper multiple
times. I fell behind in the process on more than one occasion, but I never gave
up.
In order to keep myself
motivated, I began to watch baseball games again, something that I hadn’t done
since middle school. I went to office hours and had in-depth conversations
about the sport with you, and that also helped me regain focus on what I wanted
to do with my concentration. Sometimes I did unnecessary extra work such as the
survey, which I didn’t end up using, but everything that I did contributed to
the final product.
Overall, this course
showed me that I needed discipline in my writing process. This was not
something that I had demonstrated through other essays over the progression of my
school life. I needed to pass the course with at least an A minus in order to
apply for the Journalism program and I worked extremely hard to achieve this
goal. Even if I do not achieve my objective, I thoroughly enjoyed this course
and feel as though it taught me valuable skills not only for writing but for
life.
